Lot # 95

Chalmer's Catawba Wine Bitters Trade Mark Sutter's Old Mill Spruance Stanley & Co Proprietors. - Closed

Description

Circa 1873, applied top, rich aqua with a slight green tone. This is one of the West's most iconic bottles featuring an image of Sutter's Mill where gold was discovered in 1848. These bottles are coveted by collectors of all kinds for their head to toe unique and interesting embossing. This is believed to be the top example of this bottle with loads of whittle, a very strong strike, and a few strong amber streaks in the neck and shoulder. These don't come up very often, and when they do, they're not whittled like this! This bottle was originally in the Curt Paget Collection and was auctioned by Glass Works Auctions #101 in March 2014. Ex. Ferdinand Meyer V collection. Ferdinand upgraded this bottle twice believing this example to be supreme.
